It’s possible that a lot of us will look back on 11/30/22 as the day everything changed.

That’s when ChatGPT (Chat Generative Pre-trained Transformer) opened its figurative doors to the public. From there, through to the writing of this post, things have, shall we say, been interesting – and amazing, and incredible, and shocking.

What is ChatGPT? 

ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot developed by OpenAI. It is built on top of OpenAI’s GPT-3, which is a 175,000,000,000-parameter (that’s billions) dataset of language models that has been trained and developed using both supervised, and reinforcement-based, learning algorithms. We’ve heard GPT-4 will have ~100,000,000,000,000 (that’s trillions). Basically, the whole of human knowledge. So, there’s that.

In case you’re thinking, “Big deal. I’ve used chat bots before. Why is this one different?”

Comparing GPT to the chat bots you’ve likely encountered when trying to return something on Amazon, or when accessing your bank account, or even Siri or Google Assistant, is like comparing a horse drawn carriage to a Ferrari. Yes, both will get you from A to B, but one will get you there in about an hour, whereas the other can take “many moons.”

Chat GPT is different because it’s trained on a multitude of subjects – basically, all of them – and it can handle a progressive conversation, meaning you do not have to re-type your original instructions. For example:

See what I mean? You can “speak” to GPT like you would a regular person, leaving out specific bits of information you already provided to it in the previous parts of the chat. You know that friend you had growing up, the know-it-all? GPT is just like that, except it literally knows all of it. Everything, in nearly every subject.

For the last two months the team here at The Matchstick Group has been experimenting with a number of AI tools, not just GPT, and we are already benefitting from the adoption of the various AI-powered technologies into our daily processes. 

In this post we will not be sharing our “secret sauce” (e.g., which combination of tools we’re finding success with) but we what can say is that AI-powered tools have only just begun to the scratch the surface and we will be using more of them in the coming months.

But let’s get you started on AI. Try this: 
  • Create an account at https://chat.openai.com/chat
  • Copy/paste any one of the following into the chat bar:
    • A long memo of call notes
    • A long article from a website or email from a colleague
    • A whitepaper
    • The text transcript of a several minute video
  • Put the text quotes “ “ and tell ChatGPT to summarize it for you. Tell GPT to provide you with the key take-aways.

Do that exercise a few times. You will be amazed at the speed and accuracy of the result.

Another, quick, easy, and valuable way to use GPT is to get smart on an audience. Asking GPT the types of questions you’d ask in a qualitative research project. For example, are you interested to know more about a cardiologist’s decision-making process?

Ask GPT:

It took me 5 seconds to type out the prompt, and GPT 25 seconds to type its response. Think about how long it might take you to do a Google search, sift through the results, click, glance, go back, click, glance, go back, re-type your search, sift through the new results, repeat.
